Five For Free #96

Big Wave Riders - Sunny Season

With half the US melting under a tarmac-boiling heatwave and half the UK sinking under mud and torrential rain, it's fair to say that we're both doing a pretty crap job of having a summer. Over in the unlikely location of Helsinki, Big Wave Riders are showing us how it should be done with the joyously giddy indie/funk of new single 'Sunny Season' which is from their debut album 'Life Less Ordinary', out on August 24th.

Holograms - Chasing My Mind

Punk is something that the UK and US have always nailed pretty well (we're talking true punk, not flipping Green Day or Blink 182) so it's a pleasant surprise to find that one of the best punk debuts of the year comes from Swedish new boys Holograms. Their self-titled album is out this week and from it is 'Chasing My Mind' which sounds a bit like its just been dragged through a hedge backwards.

Saint Motel - Benny Goodman

Another exciting new release this week is 'Voyeur', the new album from Saint Motel. On Monday we gave you the ace powerpop of '1997' and now here's another fabulous album cut from the record, a tribute to legendary jazz and swing musician 'Benny Goodman'. Incorporating usage of his main instrument, the clarinet, we're not sure what The King Of Swing himself would have made of it, but it's a top tune to our ears.

Erika Spring - Hidden

Erika Forster of Brooklyn experimantal outfit Au Revoir Simone is the brains behind Erika Spring and she releases her debut solo EP this week. From said EP is the incredibly fine organ-led, crashing piece of dreampop called 'Hidden' which is constructed from many layers of instruments and contains more ideas than Status Quo had in their entire career.

Other Lives - Dust Bowl III

Oklahoma's Other Lives have been in existence since 2004 but it was a further five years before they released their first album. Follow-up 'Tamer Animals' came out last summer and those who missed out on their mysterious and haunting take on Americana and indie-rock then, can now get their hands on the shimmering and harmonious 'Dust Bowl III' for free.
