Sunrom - Cosmos EP

EP review by KevW

OK, from my point of view two tracks constitutes a single rather than an EP, but I guess it's Sunrom's prerogative to name his releases as his wishes, so EP it is. The French producer (real name Romain Nouhi) deals in chilled-out beats and the kind of summery atmospherics suited to a pre-club relaxation session on a beach in the Balearic islands. That wintry, lupine cover spectacularly fails to give any indication of the easy-going warmth given off by the music contained within. So while his choice of title and artwork may be baffling, it's the music that counts, and in that respect he's done a fine job on this pair of tunes.

'Le Sable' gently bubbles into action with all the vigour of a model in a sun-lounger sipping a cocktail. This is all about the vibe, not the power, and it's a vibe he captures with grace. The mid-point breakdown gives way to an uplifting vocal section that transports you that little bit closer to the party. The second track is a reworking of previous release 'Space Heroine' and it's all laid-back, clubby beats and glistening synths. Again it's the sound of your summer days instead of your summer nights but it captures the feeling perfectly. If you're a little bored with chillwave it's handy to know that there's still some decent, traditional chill-out music being made as an alternative.
