Trust - Heaven

Single review by KevW

With electro-pop as dark and brooding as this it's no wonder that Trust has shared stages with people like Crystal Castles and DFA 1979. A mammoth tour is planned for the new year too, with the Toronto artist covering most of Europe and a handful of dates in the UK. Trust is essentially the guise of Robert Alfons who worked on his debut album with writer and producer Maya Postepski, the resulting 'TRST' being released earlier on this year. 'Heaven' is being released as a single on January 21st to coincide with his visit to these shores and it comes with a suitably strange and dark video.

A blurred, nocturnal world where people's lives seem so routine that they're nothing more than zombies is portrayed, full of emotionless faces, concrete, tower blocks and graffiti but very trippy with it. Trust paces the streets and nightspots barely clothed and at one point seeming to contemplate leaping from a railway bridge. It suits the stark nature of the song which is minimal beats and vintage electronics. There is a contrast though: if the song didn't have such a bleak video and instead was accompanied by a lighter, more colourful visual then the whole complexion might well change making this a warm and fuzzy piece instead. I guess that just goes to show the power that combined audio and visuals can have.
