Out This Week - 21st January 2013

Esben & The Witch - Deathwaltz

Brighton's gothic experimentalists return with their second album 'Wash The Sins Not Only The Face' today, and they've grown in stature a bit since we last heard from them. Esben & The Witch have managed to show that a little more production shine can improve your sound of it's done right. Of course having epic stunners like 'Deathwaltz' to put on the record doesn't do the cause any harm either.

Foxygen - Shuggie

Los Angeles duo Foxygen are a pair of songwriters with no rigid of how their songs should sound and a disregard for rules. And this makes them terrific! Their music can't be an accident, but single 'Shuggie' switches from synth-pop to soul to psychedelia to orchestral to glam rock to funk to fairy tale sounds and more. Album 'We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic' is out today.

Widowspeak - Ballad of the Golden Hour

We've been following the build-up to Widowspeak releasing their new album 'Almanac' quite closely over the past couple of months, and this week they put out the digital version of their second LP with physical to follow next week. Along with the two fine songs we've already featured, here's single 'Ballad of the Golden Hour' which is more lovely, harmonious, dreamy indie/alt-country.

Wave Machines - Counting Birds

Liverpudlian experimental rock group Wave Machines release their second album 'Pollen' this week and on free single 'Counting Birds' we find them merging electronic beats and layers of production all on top of a spooky alt-rock track that's part Portishead, part Radiohead and fairly individual too. They describe it as "consecutive beat music" which you can't exactly argue with.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Junip - Line Of Fire

Is it normal to not be a fan of Swedish singer-songwriter Jose Gonzales but still be a fan of his band Junip? Well that's the way it is. When these guys get together the combination of the instruments creates a real depth of sound that we haven't really heard from any other bands. There's just something about the timbre of the guitars that others can't seem to replicate. New single 'Line Of Fire' doesn't start out as the epic that it becomes, but over five-and-a-half minutes of building and swelling it becomes quite magical. Their new self-titled album is set for release in the spring.
