So apparently this song is written about a "terrible incident on the Number 43 Bus along Holloway Road" and according to the press release this was a stabbing. It was important enough for this London-based duo to write a song about, as it took place on the very bus route used by founder Jason Newton. Blue Angel list just about every major trip-hop act of the past 20 years as influences to their music and it shows. It's interesting that they cite Beth Orton too, herself about to make a comeback, as you can hear echoes of some of her more upbeat work in this song.
As trip-hop goes this is at the more accessible end; it's more Morcheeba than early Tricky, but don't let that make you think this is purely made as a dinner party accessory. There's more to it than that. The vocals are unusual, not in the accent they're sung but in the repetitive nature of each line. As well as typically cosmopolitan beats which have become fairly standard procedure in this field, there are glimpses outside of the box too, such as the organ that briefly crops up, giving a 60s vibe momentarily, or maybe early funk. We can't imagine the tragic circumstances that inspired this song, but at least some good has arisen from a terrible situation.
