Fancy a bit of gloomy post-punk to kickstart your morning? If, on the off-chance, you said yes to that question then your best option is to get stuck into the new single from US trio The Soft Moon who are recreating these sounds as well as anyone, including the originators. Their album 'Zeros' was released in the autumn to some acclaim and ahead of a huge tour (yes, yes, they'll be doing SXSW too) they've put forward one of the record's standouts, 'Insides', as a single, complete with a new video. A black and white one, naturally. The Soft Moon don't really do colour.
The video is a bit of a puzzler, centering around a door in the middle of nowhere and then some shady shots of the vocalist, along with abstract images. MTV here we don't come! Musically though, 'Insides' is awesome in the way it captures both mood and the sense of another time. Whether this reminds you of (the imagined) images of 1970s Berlin or early 80s Manchester it doesn't matter. It's part Factory records, part Bowie and Iggy, and all cold, icy cold, and shuddering. 'Insides' doesn't feel like it belongs in 2013, and to be honest we don't blame it.
