Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. - If You Didn't See Me (Then You Weren't On The Dancefloor)

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

There must be some logic to releasing a single the day before you release the album it's on, but we don't know what it is. The week or fortnight before? Fine, that's how it's commonly done and is great for promotion. But then Detroit alt-pop duo Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. don't do things by the book. Just listen to the policemen at the start of this video discussing how their very name is an insult to the English language. Anyway, we get this song on October 20th and second album 'The Speed Of Things' the day after. Already a pretty big name, they'll be hoping to improve on the success of 2011 debut 'It's A Corporate World'. Missed out on that? You can still get a free download of the track 'Morning Thought'.

We compared that song to The Flaming Lips' more commercial moments, and there's a similarity again with 'If You Didn't See Me (Then You Weren't On The Dancefloor)', only here they maybe edge themselves closer to the mainstream, but without selling-out. This is a decent alt-pop song that you could easily see getting people on the dancefloor, but it also works for the regular listener who simply wants pop music made well. It's another one of those that could really take off if it falls into the right hands, and hopefully with the new album there will be more tunes to match this, and perhaps then Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. will find themselves joining the ranks of the big league while maintaining a certain outsider status.
