Five For Free #241

No Coda - Numbers

Upon their signing to Nomethod earlier in the year, we said that Swedes No Coda were a band to keep an eye on, and new single 'Numbers' goes a good way towards proving that. Taken from their forthcoming album 'The Entire Cast', this is a shoegazey guitar tune with a motorik beat and plenty of voices floating in and out giving a ghostly effect.

Sea Legs - Take A Little For Yourself

Australia gives us another great band who are mixing indie and electro-pop sounds together. Sydney-based Sea Legs formed back in 2009 but have only recently been brought to our attention and released their first EP this year. With songs like new single 'Take A Little For Yourself' it's no surprise they've already played many notable gigs and are definitely a name to make note of.

Washington Irving - Fort Long

Volume 1 of 'Palomides' was released back in April, and this week Scottish alt-rock group Washington Irving release 'Palomides Volume 2', and when you put the two together you get a complete album that's sure to be highly rated. Epic finale 'Fort Long' is up there with their best and although it's bound to draw more comparisons to a certain set of other Scottish alt-rockers, this is still a top tune.

Borrowed Beams Of Light - On The Wings Of A Bug

Both band name and song title have "psychedelia" written all over them. Well, there's a hint of that, but really it's a little misleading. Virginians Borrowed Beams Of Light use the term "Cosmos pop" which kind of fits too. We'd be inclined to say that the title-track from new album 'On The Wings Of A Bug' is cosmic Americana mixed with indie-rock, and also that it's a cracker.

Weathered - Coast

More loveliness from Australia, this time it's from Weathered, the alias of Upile Mkoka from the Gold Coast. The aptly-titled 'Coast' is a slow-building, dreamy track that incorporates plucked guitar, distant, shuffling drums and a rich, lush hum of sound to produce something that starts off brilliantly but ends even better. Dare we mention a more experimental Fleet Foxes?
