Chain Of Flowers - Death's Got A Hold On Me

Cardiff's Chain Of Flowers might only be a year old, but their live sound seems up to scratch already, and new single 'Death's Got A Hold On Me' was recorded as live and shows off an energetic and slightly feral post-punk/garage-rock sound. This is no doubt inspired by their personal tastes in music, which, if the cover of Spectrum's 'How You Satisfy Me' as the B-side is anything to go by, is pretty fine.

Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra - Austerity Blues (excerpt)

The delightfully-named album 'Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything' will be the first by Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra since 2010. Quite what to expect from the band who have been described as "genre-defying protest music" can be difficult to gauge, but if this excerpt from 'Austerity Blues' is typical of the standard then it should be quite spectacular and quite special.

Molly Beanland - Night Dreams

Presented to us as a "hot new girl on the block", Londoner Molly Beanland has been making music for a few years, but it looks like this year will be the big push for her to become a recognised name and leave her mark. With a well-developed, epic electro-pop sound that takes power-ballads and makes them sound amazing, 'Night Dreams' should be the first of many top-notch releases.

Falling Off Maps - All My Fears

We've had our eyes on Falling Off Maps since the summer and the couple of singles we've covered so far have been expertly restrained alt-rock songs with just a hint of the baroque about them. 'All My Fears' continues in this vein and uses choppy rhythms and intricate touches rather than standard methods to get its message across. The album 'A Seaside Town In Winter' follows next week.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Elephant - Elusive Youth

Wow. What a was to repay our faith! Following two storming singles last year ('Skyscraper' featured in the top ten of our tracks of the year) we decided that London duo Elephant were making music in their own style, and not only that, they were making it to an incredibly high standard. Their place as one of our tips for 2013 was a no-brainer after hearing what they'd already recorded. Now it's been announced that their debut album 'Sky Swimming' will be out at the end of April, and they've made another single available as a free download. 'Elusive Youth' is less cinematic than 'Shapeshifter' or Skyscraper', so it may be more in line with other bands, particulrly those of the indiepop persuasion, although we'll bet most of those bands would have given their right arm to have written something as lush, melodic, moreish and beautiful as this. Roll on the album...
