Anto Dust - 1955

Single review by soul1@thesoundofconfusion.com

This new one from London band Anto Dust is perfect for waking on a Sunday to; you don't have to get out of bed as early as normal, you can do what you want for the day, the sun is shining and everything is glorious with these wonderful sounds filling your ears and enhancing your senses tenfold. It's a shame that we're getting battered by storm after storm really. But you can still put on '1955', close your eyes and pretend that the most perfect and relaxing of days awaits you. In fact, you don't even need to close your eyes; this song hits the right part of the brain to release all of those endorphins anyway, so even if you've got to get the ladder out and stick all the tiles back on your roof or try and track down stray dustbins lids, this is a tune that will take you to a different, and much better place for a few minutes.

Anto Dust aren't the first dreampop band as you all know, but they do have a sound that doesn't have an exact match, and that alone is deserving of praise. Yes, you can hear elements of the the usual crowd in here (Cocteau Twins, Slowdive etc.), but this is as warningly lush as the best those bands had to offer. I could go into a full description of the song, but by simply mentioning those names, along with maybe Broadcast and stock phrases like "ethereal" and "shimmering" and you can fit the pieces together yourselves. There's an awful lot of shoegaze and dreampop doing the rounds, but rarely does it turn out to be as heartwarming and spellbinding as it does here.
