No Coda - No Ransom

Single review by soul1@thesoundofconfusion.com

There might, as we speak, be only five places separating Sweden and Great Britain on the Winter Olympics medal table, but by the end we can be pretty sure they'll have widened that further. But Britain has always had the best music, right? That goes back to The Beatles and The Stones and so on. Well, as any regular reader of these virtual pages will be aware - the gap there isn't quite so big either, and our Scandinavian friends are in possession of some of the finest music the world has to offer as well. No Coda first came to our attention last summer with free download 'Holy War' which was released to mark their signing to the excellent Nomethod label. It looks like they're heading into 2014 hoping to make their name known to a few more music fans.

In truth, 'No Ransom' probably couldn't be considered to be one of the finest tracks to come out of Sweden in recent years, but that doesn't mean it's not very good. Taking a regular guitar-pop sound and applying it to a decent tune will always yield results, and this is no exception. If this were a blind test, we'd probably guess that No Coda belonged to the Brooklyn indie scene with a song like this; it's a little different to the often dreamier sounds we expect from their area. It's sharp and slightly angular, as if someone's taken post-punk and combined it with the US alt-rock scene, and as both of those genres are currently enjoying a spell in the musical sun, the future's looking bright for No Coda.
