Nolita View - Q&A + Bricks stream

Article by karla@thesoundofconfusion.com

"Another band shrouded in mystery." It was those words that began our review of Nolita View's fine single 'Islander' back in the summer. We also said they were "ones to watch". Well watch we have, and now the band have posted the first track from their new EP online for streaming. It's called 'Bricks' and you can check it out below, but we thought that this time around we'd see if we could delve a litle deeper and find out some info on the mysterious bunch.

TSOC: Who are Nolita View?

Alex: There are four of us in the band : Mike Clarke (bass) Will Jacks (vocals/guitar) Tom Northeast (drums) and myself - Alex Smyth (guitar).

TSOC: Where are you from?

A: We are based in Battersea, South London.

TSOC: How did you form/how long have you been together?

A: 18 months although some of us played together in previous bands.

TSOC: Tell us a little bit about your previous EPs and how they differ (if in any way) from your next release? What can we expect to hear from the new EP?

A: All the music is self recorded on an old recording desk we bought on eBay and an iMac. Mike our bass player takes control of production duties and I think the recording quality is increasing with each release. In terms of the songs themselves I think they are becoming more varied in terms of style but we always try to keep a strong sense of melody. Bricks for example is a bit 'mellower' than anything we've recorded previously but then the rest of the EP would probably be described as being more upbeat.

TSOC: Who/what are your influences?

A: I've been listening to 'Let It Be' by The Replacements quite a lot recently. Other influences would be Talking Heads and in terms of current bands probably Phoenix, War On Drugs and The National.

TSOC: Thinking of well-known contemporary musicians, who would you say your sound could be likened to?

A: We've been compared to Phoenix a few times although I think we're a much 'scrappier' proposition

TSOC: What would you say are the pros and cons of self recording music?

A: The pros are that you can take your time and money isn't really issue so you don't have the pressure you would have when spending a set amount of time in a studio. The cons are probably that the quality of sound isn't as good as it would be in a pro studio unless you spent quite a lot of money getting all the gear.

TSOC: Imagine you're headlining your own fantasy festival and can pick five bands/artists past or present to appear on the same bill. Who would you choose?

Talking heads
The Replacements
Frank Zappa
Notorious B.I.G
Pearl Jam

TSOC: Can we catch you live any time soon? If so, where and when?

A: Yes - The Sebright Arms, April 5th
