Out This Week - 10th February 2014

The Ninjas - Kill 'Em All

We start this week down under in Brisbane where The Ninjas are pumping out more fully-formed and refreshingly exciting fuzz-rock/powerpop. 'Kill 'Em All' is in no way connected to the Metallica album, and that's no bad thing. It contains as much energy and drive though, and if you're a bit bleary-eyed on this Monday morning then this garage-pop belter is way better than a coffee to get you going.

Yumi Zouma - The Brae

Don't be fooled by the '70s-style artwork, the debut, self-titled EP from New Zealand artist Yumi Zouma is silky and dreamy modern electro-pop of the kind that will simply flow through you, calming everything down and washing your cares away. The soft vocals and the understated yet hazily warm beats, guitar and synths of 'The Brae' make for the perfect music to lay back in the sun to.

Hannah Georgas - Enemies

We were latecomers to Vancouver songbird Hannah Georgas, only discovering her when second album was released in the UK late last year. It had already been around for a year in her homeland. The new single, Enemies', is out this week and should be the shove you need to buy the record if you haven't already, combining her wonderful voice with an indie/alt-pop sound brilliantly.

Isle Of Rhodes - Tic Toc Take II

Since we reviewed their album 'All Rivers And Oceans' in 2012, Brooklyn group Isle Of Rhodes seem to have taken a welcome leap into more individual waters. New single 'Tic Toc Part II' is full of the instrument they're named after, and also incorporates a more complete and unique sound than before. The overall effect is ever so slightly spooky, and a little bit kooky.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Soft Science - Feel

You could call Californian shoegaze band Soft Science a supergroup, as they contain past and present members of California Oranges, Holiday Flyer, Forever Goldrush, Sinking Ships, The Tank, and The Regulars. We, however, would rather just call them fantastic. This week they release their second album 'Detour' and from it is this rather splendid single called 'Feel'. Yes, yes, we've been going on about a shoegaze revival for ages now, but it really has come to fruition. My Bloody Valentine finally put out a new album, Slowdive have announced they're reforming, and the new music just keeps coming. The honeyed vocals that contrast the walls of guitar on this single are proof (not that we needed it) that although these reformations are welcomed, and even exciting, the current set of bands are grasping the genre firmly in their safe and able hands.
