NO - Leave The Door Wide Open

On single 'Leave The Door Wide Open', Los Angeles alt-rock band NO pretty much spell out what they do in the simplest of terms. The phrase "we make some noise inside a room and call it art" is really what this whole music malarkey comes down to. Beneath it all though, is the tale of the hardships of love going wrong, all arranged in a way that The National would be proud of. Their album 'El Prado' is out this week.

Woman's Hour - Her Ghost

This just emphasises how ridiculous release dates have become. 'Her Ghost' has been available for download for a while, but this week the full digital single is released, complete with a B-side. Want a physical copy? Well that will be following next month. Hey ho. Anyway, Woman's Hour have crafted an eerie yet up-tempo electro-indie tune here, it's one of the best we've heard from the London group.

Painted Palms - Forever

This band are great. If you missed 'Here It Comes' the other day, then pop back and download it. The album's been around for a few weeks but gets its official UK launch this week, and the San Francisco indie/electro/pop bunch have just unveiled a shiny new video for the record's slightly psychedelic title-track and highlight, 'Forever'.

Casi Wyn - Grace

We'll apologise for bringing her up, because it's probably not the first Casi Wyn review to do so, but the world is watching Cate Le Bon pretty closely at the moment, and her new material is sounding great, but so is that of this other Welsh songstress. Her song 'Fan Hyn' caught our attention, and the wonderful accent and spacious yet warming 'Grace' has held it.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

The Heartbreaks - Hey, Hey Lover

We've been fans of Morecambe band The Heartbreaks since their early singles, even featuring them highly in our end of year list a while back. From the outside their future seemed uncertain. In another time they'd be huge, and they do have a decent-sized fanbase, but weren't making the headway that a band this good should. So we're delighted they're back with a second album in May, and new single 'Hey, Hey Lover' is one of their best tunes yet. Their image has taken a turn for the paisley/psychedelic/baggy, but their music remains as stately and ambitious as just about any other group out there, and there's more melodrama in this one anthemic beauty than the rest of the year's songs combined. This time, world, take note.
