The Preatures - Better Than It Ever Could Be

Single review by soul1@thesoundofconfusion.com

Growing up in a place that never had public access TV, I can only trust that the retro stylings used in this video are in keeping with the image of such networks. The rest of the vintage imagery on display, such as the computer graphics and the video quality, will bring feelings of great nostalgia to anyone else who grew up in the 1980s. It's the perfect match for the song too, as 'Better Than It Ever Could Be' also makes the mind flash back to the new-wavy pop of the early part of that decade; I can almost smell the stacks of vinyl that me and my Dad would spend our Sundays sat in front of a record player listening to. Sydney's The Preatures aren't just here to take us back in time though; they're here to give us some new music.

It's no wonder that they've built such a fanbase in their few years together, because songs like this transcend genres more than most. There's a pure pop aspect to this song, but it will appeal to rock fans too, as well as those who liked the more commercial new-wave bands. Add to that the fact that fans of indie music will get some gratification from this track explains it all. Without sacrificing the sounds they wish to make, The Preatures have managed to corner most of the different markets in rock and pop music. If they continue to do so then we could be looking at a globally successful band, especially with a European tour on the horizon.
