This Is Head - Staring Lenses

Single review by soul1@thesoundofconfusion.com

Hands up who's sick of hearing about psychedelia? That's probably quite a show of hands, and to be honest we're getting tired of writing about it. The fact is though, that there are an awful lot of bands out there who are making good music that fits that description. Swedish quartet This Is Head could be called psychedelic, but they're nothing like you're expecting. Their new single 'Staring Lenses' is not quite like anything we've heard before, and it's most certainly not any form of '60s throwback. You won't find the usual trippy sounds and those same tired old guitar effects, and they probably wouldn't know what to do with a sitar if they were locked in a room with one for a week.

This song is a new form of psych - perhaps we need a new term, but until inspiration hits me we're stuck with that one. It's difficult to know where to begin when talking about this song, so we'll resort to a start to finish round-up and then let your capable ears get stuck in. Strange, almost krautrock electronic throbs begin the song and are soon joined by vocals that bounce out of the speakers and around the room in an almost ghostly way. Some poppy "ooh ooh oohs" add more of an accessibility and the percussion also develops as we go along. Then a disembodied scream is heard deep in the mix and the track jumps up that extra notch until it's begun to grow into a bit of a monster. The strings at the end are like a cherry on top. We don't know what to call it, but it's flipping good.
